Into the Deep : Autumn-Winter 2017
Anne Sylvain's Autumn/Winter 2017 Collection was inspired by the depth and texture of Abstract Expressionism.
Abstract expressionism is an art movement that developed in New York City in the 1940s after World War II. It is defined more by its emotional expression and use of shapes, colors and lines without clear subject matter than by any technique or style.
Inspiration for this collection first began when, ducking into the Denver Art Museum during a short trip, I saw for the first time Robert Motherwell's Elegy to the Spanish Republic (No. 172).
What first caught my eye was the immensity of the piece and the layers of black on black. But the more I looked at it, the more I saw. Spots of red. Layer upon layer of black, white and gray.
I began to research the abstract expressionist movement and consider how I could incorporate the inspiration I found. Blacks, grays and whites in light reflecting layers. Dashes of color one sees obtusely at first but over time becomes an inseparable part of the whole. An emphasis on pattern, line and texture.
