Will doing what you love make you happier?
About 7 years ago to the day, I decided to spend more time doing what I love. That decision led me eventually to launch Anne Sylvain. As 2015 drew to a close, I found myself thinking a lot about this transition and its contribution to my overall sense of happiness.
Research shows that happiness is a consequence of how people choose to spend their time (i.e., choosing to do what you love). Aaker, Mogilner and Rudd, "If Money Doesn't Make You Happy, Consider Time." It’s unrealistic to think that you can spend 100% of your time doing what you love. But according to this Stanford Business School study, being conscious of how you spend your time can sure make a difference.
BEING IN THE MOMENT
Not everyone has the chance to change careers. But experts say that focusing energy on even the small moments you enjoy, such as when engaging in rewarding tasks or interacting with interesting or positive people, can alter your level of happiness. Carolyn Gregoire, The Huffington Post.
SPENDING TIME WITH THE PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT
It’s probably no surprise that the quality of our relationships is also closely linked to happiness and well-being. Happiness is Being Socially Connected. "If our relationships can have such an effect on our overall health, why don't we prioritize spending time with the people around us as much as we do exercising and eating right." CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
A SENSE OF PURPOSE
Finally, studies show that a sense of purpose and meaning increases well-being and life satisfaction, boosts self-esteem and can even ward off depression. Emily Esfahani Smith, There's More to Life than Being Happy.
As the new year begins, I feel extremely fortunate to be able to do what I love every day: design and create the most beautiful and the highest quality leather accessories. It's been an incredible delight as well to meet and get to know many of the fabulous women who wear Anne Sylvain and to work with the wonderful people who make up the Anne Sylvain team.
Thanks for your support. Cheers to doing what you love in 2016!
